Early Years Foundation Stage

Curdworth Pre-School follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. The EYFS is designed for children from birth to the end of Primary School Reception Year. The overarching aim of the EYFS is to help young children achieve the five Every Child Matters outcomes of - staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and achieving economic wellbeing.

The EYFS is split into four themes: A Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments and Learning and Development. These four themes are the key principles that underpin effective practice in the care, development and learning of young children.

Unique Child

Refers to child development, inclusive practice, keeping safe and health and wellbeing.

Positive Relationships

Refers to respecting each-other, parents as partners, supporting learning and the key person approach.

Enabling Environments

Refers to observation, planning and assessment of children, supporting every child, the learning environment and the wider context (e.g. working in partnership with other settings, professionals and community groups).

Learning and Development

Refers to play and exploration, active learning, creativity and critical thinking and areas of learning and development. Learning and development is made up of six areas.

At Curdworth Pre-School we plan our activities and experiences so that all children will have opportunities to succeed and make progress in their development and learning.

To this end we use the guidance of the Early Years Foundation Stage to plan activities that will develop:

Personal, social and emotional development

Your child will learn to be self-confident, take an interest in things, know what their own needs are, tell the difference between right and wrong, and be able to dress and undress.

Communication, language and literacy

Your child will learn to talk confidently and clearly, enjoying stories, songs and poems, hearing and saying sounds, and linking them to the alphabet. They will read and write some familiar words and learn to use a pencil.

Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy

Your child will develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. They will become comfortable with numbers and with ideas such as 'heavier than' or 'bigger'. They will be aware of shapes and space and measure.

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Your child will explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it. They will build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for. They will find out about past events in their lives and their families' lives. They will find out about different cultures and beliefs.

Physical development

Your child will learn to move confidently, controlling their body and handling equipment. Their fine motor skills (threading) will be honed as well as gross skills (climbing).

Creative development

Your child will explore colours and shapes, trying out dance, making things, telling stories and making music.

We have an excellent relationship with Curdworth Primary School. This allows us to use their playground and hall for PE. Children can safely play outside in the attached outside play area and the newly refurbished park is only a short walk away.
